The Government of Malawi has announced plans to establish a fertiliser manufacturing plant by the 2027/28 farming season to reduce the country’s dependence on imported fertiliser.
Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Roza Mbilizi said the Government of Morocco already dispatched a team of experts from OCP Africa, a fertiliser manufacturing company, who conducted a joint workshop with Malawian experts on the establishment of the plant.
She said this in Blantyre on Friday when she received a donation of 500 metric tonnes (MT) of fertiliser from the Kingdom of Morocco.
She said: “The momentum, Your Excellency, which started in March 2026 should continue until this objective is achieved.”
Commenting on the donation, Mbilizi said the gesture followed President Peter Mutharika’s appeal last year after the country experienced widespread hunger.
In response, Morocco pledged to donate 1 000 MT of fertiliser to Malawi.
Speaking at the event, Oumiyer said the donation reflects King Mohammed VI’s vision of solidarity and cooperation with other countries.
